Breaking Barriers, Building Bridges
by Gerardo Palencia

The trajectory of my life took an unexpected turn one evening when I received the news of my family's move to America, a prospect too promising for me to decline. Moving to the United States at the age of 15 marked an important moment in my life, an opportunity filled with both promise and challenges. While I recognized the potential positive impact on my future, the thought of facing language barriers and leaving behind my family and friends loomed large. My initial months in the United States proved to be challenging, characterized by struggles to communicate due to the language barrier. Yet, I understood that a negative mindset would not pave the way to my goals. Determined to make the most of the opportunity I had, I resolved to overcome these challenges with the help of many, which guided me to find dentistry as my path.

As time progressed, I began to appreciate how hard work in this new country could open doors to numerous opportunities. Guided by supportive professors and peers, I actively sought avenues to enhance my studies and achieve both academic and personal growth. This period in my life sculpted the person I am today. The nights spent missing my loved ones and the challenges of adapting to a foreign language taught me to persevere in the face of change, fortifying my motivation to achieve the goals my parents envisioned for a better future.

Amidst the challenges of adapting to a new culture and language, the ASDA emerged as a center of support and guidance during my undergraduate studies, profoundly influencing my college experience. Witnessing the formation of a cohesive and like-minded community within the ASDA PDC propelled me toward both personal and professional growth. The evident commitment to collective development within this community ignited a personal aspiration to contribute meaningfully, leading me to take on the role of Dental Shadowing Chair.

As the Dental Shadowing Chair, I was fortunate to play a role in facilitating numerous members navigate through the field. This officer position served as a conduit for many to confirm their passion for dentistry, propelling them toward realizing their full potential within the field. ASDA fostered a sense of belonging and became a platform for me to evolve into an accountable and communicative leader.

Navigating the responsibilities of the Dental Shadowing Chair position within the organization, I learned the importance of accountability and effective communication. Witnessing firsthand the impact of organized dental shadowing experiences on the members reinforced my commitment to fostering an environment that nurtured individual interests and aspirations. Now as president of this organization, not only do I continue to grow personally, but most importantly help many shape their path as well.

ASDA not only welcomed me into a supportive community during the unprecedented circumstances of the pandemic but also helped my personal and professional development. Transitioning into a leadership role as the Dental Shadowing Chair allowed me to further contribute to the growth of fellow members, fostering a sense of purpose and direction within the organization. Through that experience, as well as now being president, I learned the importance of being an accountable and communicative leader, skills that extend beyond the realm of dentistry and into various aspects of my life. The journey to the United States, the challenges faced, and the invaluable experiences with the ASDA collectively shaped my character, resilience, and leadership abilities, guiding me in my pursuit of being part of this unique profession.

I found out about ASDA through social media and decided to join my freshman year in order to enrich my pre-dental journey. This organization has provided me with lifelong friendships with mentors and fellow members, creating a safe environment in which we can all cheer each other in order to achieve our common goal of becoming dentists. Although it was intimidating to join the club at first, I soon realized that this was a comfortable place to explore different opportunities and unique memories. Some of my hobbies include supporting Real Madrid and playing tennis.
